Spray Mum Cultural Tips

There are four ways to grow flowering spray chrysanthemums:

Beds or benches. These may be ground beds or raised benches filled with root media. This method allows the utilization of existing facilities or, in the case of ground beds, minimizes construction costs.

Pots. Plants grown in pots provide for: easy use of existing pot plant facilities; more efficient use of growing space and; the ability to rotate in and out of crops more easily.

Pinched or non-pinched. Most spray mums are grown single stem in order to: reduce crop time; improve quality; increase flower production per stem; eliminate pinching and pruning labor. The only time of the year to consider pinched crops is for summer flowering under high-light conditions.

Natural season.
The natural season for flowering chrysanthemums is in the fall -- primarily in late September, October and into November. This is a time when the market for fresh flowers is normally strong. The quality of mums for consumers can be at its zenith.
